FIREFIGHTER CANCER SUPPORT NETWORK ANNOUNCES
NEW ADMINISTRATION
Garry Briese to Become Executive Director
August 25, 2011, – Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) announced today an addition to their staff. Garry Briese, Executive Director, comes to FCSN with over 36 years of experience in the fire service, most of that time spent as the Executive Director of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. “We couldn’t be more pleased to have Garry join our team,” said Mike Dubron, President of FCSN. “His background will be invaluable to our organization as we grow.”
Pennsylvania Presumption Milestone
House and Senate Pass Farry Bill Designating Cancer an Occupational Disease for Firefighters 6/27/2011 House Bill 797, legislation authored by Rep. Frank Farry (R-Bucks) to designate cancer as an occupational disease for firefighters, has overwhelmingly passed the House and Senate and is on its way to Gov. Tom Corbett for his signature.
“Pennsylvania’s volunteer and career firefighters sacrifice a great deal to protect our lives and property,” said Farry. “If they develop the horrible disease of cancer as a result of that service they deserve our support and proper protection. My legislation ensures they will receive it.”
Under the bill, firefighters can receive workers’ compensation if they develop cancer and can establish direct exposure to certain carcinogens at fire or hazmat incidents. To be eligible for workers’ compensation, the firefighter would have to have participated in continuous firefighting duty for four or more years and have successfully passed a cancer-free physical exam prior to asserting the claim or engaging in firefighting duties.
The bill passed the House by a vote of 200 to 1 on June 21. The Senate approved the legislation today by a vote of 50 to 0. Corbett is expected to sign the measure soon.
Legislators have attempted to provide cancer protection for firefighters for 25 years. A similar measure by Rep. Kevin Murphy (D-Scranton) was vetoed in 2010 by then-Gov. Ed Rendell. In introducing the bill in this session, Farry began working with all the stakeholders shortly after re-election in November to arrive at a compromise on the bill’s language. As a result, many of the groups that opposed the bill in the last session now support it.
“I worked closely with local government, municipal organizations and career and volunteer firefighters to address concerns with the bill,” said Farry. “I am pleased that we can now offer this much-needed protection to our firefighters and look forward to the governor signing this bill.”

USFA and NIOSH Initiate Study of Cancer among Firefighters
Contact: USFA Press Office: (301) 447-1853
Emmitsburg, MD. – The United States Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are partnering on a study to examine the potential for increased risk of cancer among firefighters due to exposures from smoke, soot, and other contaminants in the line of duty. "There is a need to have a comprehensive study of the incidence of cancer in the fire service involving objective medical and epidemiological oversight. We have lost too many firefighters from this disease," said USFA Administrator Kelvin J. Cochran. “USFA is pleased to work with NIOSH in this initiative."
