On August 5th, Katie McCurdy reached out to a private Facebook page with a small favor. She was asking if anyone in that private group was attending Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC). She shared that her husband, Isaac, a Statesville North Carolina Firefighter who is 32 was in the hospital battling his third round of testicular cancer and was unable to attend. She wanted to surprise him with a t-shirt. She was not able to attend and purchase the shirt for him because his immune system was so low, she could not leave the hospital.
FCSN friend, Frank Leeb stopped by the Firefighter Cancer Support Network booth to share the story he had seen on Facebook. Within moments we had our President Bryan Frieders, Joe Schumacher our COO (two-time cancer survivor), and Curtis Dunn, Vice President – West, on the way to the hospital to visit Isaac with shirts, challenge coins and stickers in hand.
Our team stayed for almost an hour. They chatted about life on the job, mentorship and resources, and cancer survivorship with our new friend, Isaac. It was an absolute honor to be in Indianapolis and receive the message at the right time. Isaac and Katie are now a part of the FCSN family and they know that NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE!
