FCSN was proud to partner with the National Firefighter Registry at FDIC 2023. Joe Schumacher, FCSN COO and three-time cancer survivor, shared the stage with NFR Team Lead Kenny Fent, PhD CIH, Director of NIOSH National Firefighter Registry, to tout the registry, which tracks firefighter cancer diagnoses to allow researchers to learn more about the link between firefighting and cancer.
Participating in the NFR is voluntary, however FCSN believes that all firefighters should take part in it. FCSN has committed to advising our FCSN volunteers, mentors and mentees that the NFR is open to all firefighters, encouraging firefighters to register, and spreading the word, including retired or former firefighters, about the impact of the NFR.
By supporting the NFR, FCSN hopes to learn more about the health risks firefighters’ face. Information gleaned from this project will be useful to fire departments, fire service organizations, standard-setting organizations, and policy makers throughout the country and will ultimately help reduce cancer risk among firefighters.
The National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer is the largest effort ever undertaken to understand and reduce risk of cancer among U.S. firefighters.
NIOSH is recruiting firefighters to join the NFR so that we can better understand the link between firefighting and cancer.
