THE FCSN SURF TO THE STRIP CANCER BIKE RIDE
is a 3 night/ 4 day bike ride from the LA County Lifeguard Headquarters in Santa Monica to the City of Las Vegas Fire Department headquarters in Las Vegas, and will commence on April 11, 2018 and end on April 14, 2018. The event will consist of a dozen riders stopping at fire houses along the route promoting Firefighter Cancer awareness and prevention.
THE STORY BEHIND THE RIDE
My name is James Ramlochan- born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Having grown up around the fire service my whole life, I knew that this was the career path that I wanted to pursue. After joining a Basic Fire Academy in 2017, Chief Bryan Frieders came to talk to my class about joining the service, and in his closing remarks he ended with how he was the president of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and how heavily cancer affects firefighters today. Little did Chief Frieders know how my life has been affected by cancer, and my huge interest in knowing cancer’s devastating impact on this lifelong career I am in the process of joining. After losing my aunt and uncle whom I was very close within the same year, I lost one of my best friends from high school weeks before Chief Frieders gave his talk. Just a few months ago, my mentor lost his best friend, a very close family friend who was a firefighter who lost his life to job related cancer. I wanted to do something challenging but have a meaning to it, so I jumped all over this opportunity and I teamed up with the FCSN, got support from FIRE VELO with a group of retired and active firefighters, and future firefighters from Burbank to raise money and bring awareness for firefighters with cancer, and the impact it makes not only on the individual but also the family.
